Who do politicians think they are?

If you haven't heard by now about the accusations and comments being made by Layton, Duceppe and Dion toward Shane Doan, former Winnipeg Jet, and captain of the Phoenix Coyotes as well as the latest version of Team Canada, I will give you the quick and dirty on it.

Doan was accused a few years ago for making racist comments toward a francophone referee during a game against the Canadians. The NHL investigated but found nothing to support the accusation. Issue dead? Apparently not.

Since our federally elected officials have absolutely nothing better to do with their time, they have chosen to beak Hockey Canada for letting Doan - who they claim is a racist - be the captain of team Canada.

Jack Layton, Gilles Duceppe and Stephane Dion have run out of things to critique the Conservatives on so they have chosen to pick on a high profile hockey player who "allegedly" made racist comments.

Shame on them. What proof do they have? None. Is it a coincidence that in order for the Conservatives to win a majority government, they will have to win votes in French-speaking Quebec? I don't think it is a coincidence and if you think it is, than you are quite simply naive.

These three leaders are hoping that the Prime Minister will not act on these accusations and the people of Quebec will get angry at the conservatives and therefore not vote for them. Is that just politics as usual? Maybe... but have some decency and don't hide behind the fact that you are a politician and therefore can accuse people of whatever you feel like.

Just know that Doan does have deep pockets and if I were him I would file lawsuits against all of these cowardly politicians for dragging his name through the mud.

Perhaps the allegations are true, but there is no evidence. It is a referee's word against his. It is the same thing as two young boys on the playground, with one boy telling his teacher that the other boy called him stupid, but the other boy denies it. It is one word against the other.

I think the thing that really gets to me is the fact that politicians have no place in sports.

Nobody puts up a fuss when these politicians place useless people in the senate or appoint the governor general, so why question Steve Yzerman's choice to give Shane Doan the captain's C?

Hockey players know hockey. Politicians know how to lie and how to appoint rich influential people to useless high-paying positions.

Stick to what you know gentlemen, and keep your dirty politics out of sports and in that capital house on the hill.
