Company Chairman Ratan Tata of Tata Motors Limited, India’s top automative producer, revealed its much anticipated $2500 USD car the Tata Nano on Thursday January, 10th 2008 in New Delhi. This ultra cheap car enters a previously untapped market bringing affordability to tens of millions. Ratan Tata insists the four-door subcompact car will meet international safety standards. The car is designed to fit five people, in many opinions, a squeeze. Tata also insists that the car will pollute even less than motorcycles, passing domestic and European emissions standards and averaging about 50 Miles Per Gallon which converts to 21.25 Kilometers Per Liter.

The car has seat belts but no air bags. The two-cylinder engine delivers 33 horsepower and a top speed around 100km/hr. Critics of the concept car have argued about safety issues given the speed and the size. Additionally the result of this vehicle may cause a flood of cars in the already crowded Indian streets adding to their air and noise pollution. For the time being the car will only be sold in India but Tata Motors hopes to export it at a later date.

It is doubtful that such a car would become available in Winnipeg anytime soon given their initial conservative production schedule. Even if it does, it probably doesn’t have a block-heater for our Winnipeg weather.

Do you think we have a feasible market in Manitoba for such a vehicle?

I can't imagine driving on Winnipeg roads with those tiny wheels, not just in winter, but any time of the year!
