Your wedding day – it’s debatably one of the most important days in a woman’s life. Everything must be exactly how you want it, in the right colour scheme, and it must stand out from everyone else’s.

Ashley Curry, 25, married her fiancé, Brent Dixon, last July. She wanted her wedding to be unique and interactive for her guests. As a party favour she created a candy buffet – her guest could walk up and help themselves to the different varieties of sweets available.

“I wanted a favour that was unique and different, and that my guests could interact with,” said Curry.

She had no intentions of starting a business at the time, but now Curry is the owner operator of Sweetness Buffet, a custom candy buffet company in Winnipeg, Manitoba, targeted towards do-it yourself brides who want a unique aspect to their wedding that is affordable.

“I felt I needed to justify my purchases to my fiancé,” Curry said. She expected to rent out the fabric and glass jars she had purchased for her own wedding.

What inspired Curry to start her own business and leave her job designing real estate brochures, was realizing no company in Winnipeg offered candy buffets that were affordable, and custom designed to a wedding theme.

“It’s for the everyday bride, it’s not going to break the bank,” said Curry.

“You spend about $2-3 per guest, which is reasonable for a party favour.”

Curry recently had a booth at the Wonderful Wedding Show and says she gained a lot of clientele from it – she has 28 candy buffets booked for this summer with a price range of anywhere from $250 to over $550.

“I’m doing everything from backyard weddings to ritzy weddings at The Gates,” said Curry.
